There are times when it is just dang hard to get stuff done.

We call these times “ruts”.

We’ve all been in a rut.

There are two reasons you might be in a rut:

Feelings and Circumstances.

Feelings

There are times when you’re just not up to work. You justify wasting time, you sleep in, you can’t seem to focus. You might be depressed or be anxious for one reason or another. Perhaps you’re having second thoughts about starting a business.

I’ve experienced some of those feelings.

It sucks.

But these times have usually passed pretty quickly for me and I can get back on track for hitting my goals.

Circumstances

The other rut is brought on by things outside your control. This is what has been happening to me this week. My wife had a beautiful baby girl a week ago, and it has taken a major toll on my work hours and productivity.

Obviously.

It increases the level of respect I have for other parents who have to balance their businesses with their families. It can be tough, but it can be done.

I’ve had some late nights, early mornings, doctor appointments, and a hundred other things to attend to this week because of the baby. I’m happy to do them, but it can be tough on a startup.

The goal for next week is to get back to 100% productivity like before.

It might be rough on my body, but schedule is key.

My sleep schedule needs to stay as predictable as possible. Being at home all day increases my “nap vulnerability”, but I have to force myself to go to bed around 10 and get up at 4:45 like normal.

I may be exhausted for a few days here and there, but I know my business will continue to thrive if I can dig out of the rut and get on a somewhat regular working schedule again.

What have you done to get yourself out of a rut?
